"The More That You Read..."

Read Across America Day!

February 25, 2011

In celebration of the birthday of one of the most-beloved childrens' authors, the National Education Association (NEA) has proclaimed March 2nd Read Across America Day!

Join the rest of America and celebrate one of our greatest national treasures: "Dr. Seuss!"  On March 2nd, take the time to sit with your child and read to, or with them!  Make it a special day that gets them excited to read!!  Share your favorite Dr. Seuss books from when you were a kid, plan a party,  or make green eggs and ham!

Here are some ideas to help you celebrate reading and Dr. Seuss:

- Attend a "Read Across America Event." See "This Week's Picks," for some ideas.

- Plan an event at school.  Go to www.nea.org/readacross to see how.

- Plan your own party, with friends or just your kids!

- Want to make Green Eggs and Ham or Pink Ink Drink for your Wink? Check out Macaroni EATS newsletter for  recipes!

- Head to Seusville for games, activities, and everything Seuss!

- Visit Green Olives and Ham for some fun, creative projects.

-And here are a few activities thanks to fellow MK PM mom, Danielle Moore:

Cat in the Hat dot to dot (printable- includes numbers 1 to 78)

Can you match the Dr. Suess character with the name (on screen, takes a bit to load the graphics.)

Cat in the Hat Coloring Page (Make sure you change your printer setting so it prints on one page.)

Literature Activity Guide for the Sneetches (Some great ideas for book discussion.)

Dr. Suess Word Search Puzzle (Includes names of characters.  Best suited to a child who is reading well.)

And always remember..."The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." (Dr. Seuss, from I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!)

Happy Reading!
