You may think Fathers Day was created by the Greeting Card companies. Although they love the day, its not so. Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, thought of the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. She wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Mr. Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her fatherhad shown in raising his children as a single parent.
And that is how Fathers Day came about! A great story for a GREAT day!
